2nd Annual Blanket Solution- Recap
On 8 December 2018, Reynelda Jones hosted A Solution B's 2nd Annual Blanket Solution event at Baker Book House. Christmas music was playing gently behind the chatter of guests gathered at the tables, and piles of folded fabric lined the back wall. Representatives from Women at Risk International (WAR) came as well and set up a booth in the corner. As the room filled Reynelda called everyone's attention to the front of the room.
An important theme of the night was what is central to the intentions of A Solution B: using a holistic approach to the many struggles we face. Reynelda invited Angel, a representative of WAR, to speak. She explained that the organization seeks to help trafficking survivors in several aspects of their lives. She said that WAR fights exploitation, slavery, abuse, neglect, and other forms of crime as well as human trafficking, and that a vital aspect of their aid is a holistic approach to victims' needs.
Elijah from Ellnora's Kitchen came next to speak. Elijah has long been a source of light and activism in the community in the community. Every Christmas and Thanksgiving he has been giving a free meal to anyone who walks through the door. He said that last year the kitchen fed nearly 1600 people with these efforts. Five years ago, he decided to start giving away toys as well to families in need—an effort that the blanket event was trying to bolster with toy donations at the door.
Following Elijah, Luke Fortier, a friend and former coworker of Reynelda Jones, explained how the idea of the holistic approach to better life decisions heavily influenced his own growth and mental health, and how Reynelda had influenced this concept in his life.
The guests proceeded to pick from the large pile of fabric and followed Reynelda's instructions of how to make the blankets that would later be donated to people in need of them. Children, parents, friends, and family gathered around the tables crafting blankets while others observed and purchased accessories and jewelry at WAR's booth that were hand-crafted by victims of human trafficking. Toys filled the box by the door and cookies and coffee faded from the table along the wall. Overall, the event was a success, producing blankets and toys and connections which provided for some needed light in the community this holiday season
