Trailblazer Interview: Kyle Austin

Trailblazer Interview: Kyle Austin

One of my favorite things to do is connect with passionate individuals using their talents to help the community. I like to call them trailblazers, visionaries who help us understand more about our health and emotions.

Today’s trailblazer is Kyle Austin, founder of the Distinct Gyarari fashion brand and mental health advocate. I’ve known Kyle for some time, and we’ve had the opportunity to grow together as content creators. While attending an event called Rock the Runway, which funds breast cancer awareness, I heard that Kyle was releasing a product line and that he was working on a mental health program. I knew immediately that I had to interview him and hear more about how he’s got to where he is today.

About Kyle

Kyle graduated high school in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the cancellation of the district finals basketball game, he was unable to be scouted for college basketball. However, this allowed Kyle to recognize that he was much more than an athlete and begin to realize his dream of starting a clothing brand. He came up with the name Distnct Gyarari to reflect his unique identity and his understanding of fashion as art. Kyle originally thought of naming his brand “Distnct Galleries,” but after researching the name in different languages, he decided to use the Japanese translation of “gallery” to add flair and prestige to the name.

Building Successful Strategies

At first, Kyle thought he was too young to start his own clothing brand. However, he was inspired by other young people working towards their dreams and wants to encourage more to do the same. He believes that the first thing to do is get the mindset of being too young out of your head and believe that you’re never too young to start doing something great. Being young can actually be an asset, as you have time to try new things, fail, learn, and succeed.

One of Kyle’s guiding principles is that it’s okay to fail. He believes there’s a lot you can learn from failure, as it allows you to understand where you may be lacking and make plans to do better in the future. It helps you learn how to keep your success going and keep your business consistent. He also understands that people often don’t show the struggles they go through on social media, and that we shouldn’t compare our own success to what we see online.

Staying away from social media has been a large factor in helping Kyle protect himself from this harmful mindset. He started by taking a few hours a day off of social media and found that he was taking a very different approach to his clothing brand. In basketball, Kyle believes you should “learn before you play the game,” which he was able to translate to his clothing brand. Taking a break from social media allowed him the time to learn about what it takes to build a successful business and focus on his goals. Though it was hard at the beginning, making this sacrifice became natural for Kyle and he was able to build the discipline he needed to succeed.

One of the major challenges for Kyle was seeing himself in a different role other than being a basketball player. He thinks it was a choice to believe that everyone has more than one gift. Part of what pushed him to make this decision was his anger at the COVID-19 situation and his inability to play basketball during the pandemic. Anger is often vilified, but when used constructively in a controlled way, it can be a way to motivate you or change your mindset.

A Mental Health Service for Everyone

Kyle started noticing that his mental health was becoming an issue after he stopped loving basketball. He wasn’t motivated to put in the work and felt that all his efforts were futile. He found himself withdrawing from the world and becoming quiet, physically present but not engaged with the things he used to enjoy doing. He knew he had to seek support to improve his mental health and get back to the person he used to be.

Now, after reflecting on his past struggles with mental health and how he has overcome different challenges in his life, Kyle was motivated to create a mental health service. He wants to use his service to share lessons that he has learned regarding getting through depression, reorganizing your mind into a better state, and transforming bad thoughts into good ones.

While his service is for everyone, Kyle thinks it is especially beneficial for athletes who are trying to figure out where they want to go in regard to their careers and the adversity they face trying to get there. A lot of athletes get to a point where they have to ask themselves if they want to continue playing their sport in college, which involves a higher level of commitment and motivation in order to succeed. In their journey to becoming professional athletes, they have to juggle multiple things at once, such as family responsibilities, increased media attention, and staying motivated to keep doing better. Kyle believes that sport is more mental than physical, meaning athletes in particular have to take care of their mental health in order to succeed.

In short, mental health is the main factor behind success. Taking care of your mental health can lead you to do amazing things, and the biggest hurdle is your own mindset.
