Many of my clients and blog subscribers often ask about the design choices in my office space. While I offer “Environmental Exploration” during therapy sessions, I realized I haven’t shared much about what that truly looks like in practice. So, after relocating A Solution B to a new space, I’m excited to give you a behind-the-scenes look into how I designed my office with therapeutic and mental wellness principles in mind.
Creating a workspace that supports emotional wellness is essential—especially for women entrepreneurs and working professionals who often balance multiple responsibilities. A nurturing, intentionally designed space can help you stay grounded, reduce stress, and boost productivity.
Below I share the steps I took into account with my office space. (It looks like a lot, but much of this information overlaps.)
Techniques and Methods
What Is Environmental Exploration in Therapy?
Environmental exploration focuses on how your physical surroundings affect your mental health. Whether it’s lighting, layout, color, or scent—each factor has the power to influence how you feel, function, and focus.
Intentional Space and Functional Space
What does intentional and functional space mean? I can answer this in a few ways. First, every item within my office has been placed with the intention to be used, how it would be used, and therefore has been assigned a function. For example, my corner is covered in “décor”…this décor also provides therapeutic interventions to my clients.
Understanding the Feng Shui Bagua Map (and How I Use It)
While I don’t practice Feng Shui formally, I do apply basic principles to support wellness and flow in my space. The Feng Shui Bagua Map is a layout tool used to divide a space into zones representing different aspects of life, such as career, relationships, and health. Based on the Feng Shui Bagua Map, the placement of one of my corner tables helps to build and enhance skills.
My desk is placed in the “business relationships” corner, facing the door. According to Feng Shui, facing the door symbolizes readiness and openness.
To slow down fast-moving energy (Qi) from the hallway, I placed a plant near the entrance—a tip from my colleague, Susi Molina, a Feng Shui Consultant and CEO of My Life My Space.
And my desk is located in the corner of business relationships, facing the door. Because there is a hallway right in front of the door, my friend Susi Molina, Feng Shui Consultant and CEO of My Life My Space shared to add a plant near the entrance. This plant is to move some of the Qi out of the way and slow its pace towards me. I should add, Feng Shui encourages an individual to place the office desk in the position of facing a doorway. It is believed that having your back to the door also means that you will experience negative interactions with others who may wish to backstab.
A Feng Shui Bagua Map is similar to a that a GPS map or paper document which we use to find people and locations. The Bagua map provides insight as to what areas of a building or space is beneficial for you and your visitors. Areas includes abundance in life, wealth, relationships, among other things.

That is why it is so important to address the whole people as your environment, the things in it, the air, the lighting and even the people you trust within your space can make a difference in your stability.

6 Wellness-Based Tips to Improve Your Office Space
Here are a few steps you can take to have purposeful and positive spaces
Place Items you’ve created
Add items with your own energy within your space. This helps to make the space more of your own. Focus on items that you created while in a positive mood. Bringing that radiating energy to your space as well. Why it works: These items carry your energy and intentions, making your space feel more personal and empowering.
Actional Tip: Try to place a few of your personal projects around your desk or workspace to remind you of your achievements and passions.
Add items with meaning
Place items that have meaning to you and are connected with positive, calming experiences. Be sure not to place items that are triggers as this may not promote healing. Why it works: This helps reinforce positive emotions and can help you stay connected to your purpose and intentions.
Actionable Tip: Avoid placing items that might trigger negative memories or emotions. Instead, curate objects that lift your mood and inspire creativity.
Choose Color with Intention
Color plays a vital role in how we feel in a space—not just because of aesthetics, but because of the meaning we assign to it. Choose colors that reflect your personal values, goals, or emotional needs. For example, blue is often associated with calm and clarity, making it an excellent choice for focus and clear thinking. Whether it’s a vibrant yellow that inspires joy or a grounding green that symbolizes growth, let your color choices support your mental wellness through both beauty and meaning.
As you can see in the image above In my therapy office, I chose a not so suttle blue for clarity. If you're looking to bring that same calm into your space, check out my affirmation pillows and chic wellness gifts to help you set the tone.
Why it works: Color psychology supports emotional regulation, productivity, and focus, making it a powerful tool to elevate your work environment.
Actionable Tip: Choose a primary color for your space that aligns with your emotional needs and pair it with accent colors that inspire and uplift you.
Integrate Natural Elements
Incorporating plants and natural materials into your office can reduce stress and improve mood. Consider adding low-maintenance plants like succulents or peace lilies, or using wooden decor and pictures of nature to bring a touch of nature indoors. Why it works: Nature has a calming effect on the brain, which can help reduce anxiety and promote creativity.
Actionable Tip: Add one or two low-maintenance plants to your workspace. Choose varieties that thrive in indoor lighting, like succulents or spider plants.
Organize your space to decrease clutter
The less clutter you have, the less overwhelmed you may feel.
Why it works: A clutter-free environment reduces distractions and promotes focus.
Actionable Tip: Take a few minutes at the end of each day to tidy up. It will help you start the next day with a clear mind and a fresh perspective.
Feel the vibe
Sit back, relax and feel the vibes in your space. Whether the vibe is pleasurable or not so pleasurable, be sure to listen or feel the message your space is sharing with it. This is a great opportunity to make any adjustments as needed.
Why it works: Trusting your intuition and checking in with your space allows you to make small changes that will improve your overall well-being.
Actionable Tip: If you notice any discomfort, don’t be afraid to shift things around. A few adjustments might make all the difference in how you feel
