2 Grounding Techniques Using Everyday Tools

Hello, and welcome ! Today I’ll be talking about grounding techniques. What are they? Why are they important? Let’s find out.

What Is A Grounding Technique?

A grounding technique uses either one or a combination of your five senses. When you’re feeling overwhelmed or having negative thoughts, your senses quickly help to bring you back to the present. This differs from mindfulness, as mindfulness is focused on experiencing emotions, accepting them, and working through the emotions. Grounding is more about knowing you’re in a safe place and being able to problem solve, reduce traumatic flashbacks, and get through your negative and overwhelming feelings.

How To Get Started

Technique 1

There are two grounding techniques that I love to use for my clients. The first is to use a jade roller on your face to help move fluids through your lymphatic system. Jade rollers are usually pretty inexpensive, and you can find them at CVS, Walgreens, pharmacies, and grocery stores.

Some people put their roller in the fridge to make it extra cold, but usually they’re cool to the touch already. When you roll the jade on your face, you’re going to want to focus on the coolness of the stone, the pressure you are putting on your skin, and the movement of the roller. It’s like a face massage, only we’re focusing on our touch sensation to calm ourselves down. After you finish using it, make sure to clean your roller of any oils it may have picked up on your face.

Technique 2

The second technique, and my favorite, involves lotion. You want to choose a lotion that smells good and makes you feel like you’re in a safe and happy place.

When you put your lotion on your hands, you want to pay attention to how it feels:

  1. Is it warm? Cold? Smooth? Thick? In a circular motion, rub the lotion on your hand with two fingers and pay attention to how your hand looks with lotion versus how it looks without lotion.

  2. You are going to want to go as slow as possible to bring yourself to the present moment, maybe even stopping to smell your hands.

  3. As you rub the lotion into your hands, try to think of something that is soothing, encouraging, or exciting that the scent reminds you of. If you don’t have a memory to relate to the scent, think of thoughts and images that are relaxing to you instead.

Using multiple senses, in this case vision, touch, and smell, brings you back to the present moment quicker.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Try to use these grounding techniques at least three times before you decide they are not for you, as usually this is the length of time it takes for people to understand what results to expect. Practice these techniques even when you aren’t feeling anxious, so you can be ready to use them when you need them most.

That’s all for right now! If you have any questions, please let me know, and be sure to check out the other articles I have posted on my blog. Have a great week!
