It is officially a Michigan winter, which means cozy nights under your favorite blanket and comforting warm beverages are a must. One great recipe that not only warms you up but also has many health benefits is turmeric. Its vibrant golden color and unique flavor make it a popular spice in various cuisines.

An easy way to incorporate the goodness of turmeric into your daily routine is through a delectable drink known as Golden Milk. This creamy concoction blends together the earthy notes of turmeric with the sweetness of milk and a touch of honey or maple syrup for added flavor. Incorporating turmeric into your diet not only adds warmth to your winter days but also offers potential health benefits, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. So, why not curl up with a cup of Golden Milk and enjoy the comfort and nourishment it brings during this chilly season?

Emotional Wellness

When it comes to mental health, there are numerous benefits associated with the various elements of Golden Milk, also called Turmeric Latte. This traditional Ayurvedic drink, typically made with turmeric, ginger, and other spices, is believed to support mental well-being by promoting relaxation, reducing inflammation, and providing antioxidant properties that may contribute to overall brain health. The combination of these ingredients in Golden Milk is thought to have a calming effect on the mind, potentially aiding in stress reduction and providing a sense of comfort and tranquility

Who Should Avoid Golden Milk

Although Golden Milk has many benefits, such as its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, there are individuals who should avoid foods or be more cautious with turmeric due to certain health conditions. These include people who:

  • are prone to gallstones,

  • individuals prone to bile duct obstructions,

  • and those who are required to take blood thinners or have bleeding disorders.

  • People with known allergies to ingredients commonly found in golden milk

  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consume golden milk cautiously. While turmeric is generally safe in small amounts, excessive intake may have adverse effects.

It's important for these individuals to consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating turmeric-containing products into their diet.

Items You will Need

To make Golden Milk at home, here are the items that you will need to gather from your kitchen or local grocery store.
You will need milk or a milk substitute such as almond or oat milk, along with aromatic ingredients like cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom. Don't forget to add a dash of vanilla for a hint of sweetness, and if desired, a sweetener of your choice to enhance the flavor.

Recipe for Golden Milk

Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Serving size: 1 cup

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of milk (you can use any type of milk - cow's milk, goat milk, almond milk, coconut milk, or soy milk)

  • 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric

  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger

  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground cardamom

  • 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract

  • Pinch of black pepper

  • 1 tablespoon of honey or sweetener of your choice (optional)

Instructions

1. Pour the milk into a small saucepan and heat it over medium heat until it is warm, but not boiling. Stir occasionally to prevent it from scorching the bottom.
2. In a separate bowl, combine the ground turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom. Mix them well to ensure even distribution of the spices.
3. Gradually add the spice mixture to the warm milk, whisking continuously to avoid clumps. Keep stirring until the milk turns a beautiful golden color.
4. Lower the heat and allow the mixture to simmer gently for about 5 minutes. This step helps infuse the flavors and combine everything perfectly.
5. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. If you prefer a sweeter taste, add the honey or sweetener of your choice. Mix well until everything is fully incorporated.
6. Pour the golden milk into a cup or a mug, and garnish with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon on top if desired.
7. Your delicious golden milk is now ready to be enjoyed.

Take a moment to savor the warmth and the comforting qualities of this ancient medicinal beverage.

Tips: Feel free to adjust the quantities of the spices and sweetness according to your personal taste preference. A pinch of black pepper enhances the absorption of the beneficial properties of turmeric.
